Hello all. I have Windows XP Home Edition and when I shut
down my computer, it hangs at "It is now safe to turn off
your computer". I have all my BIOS/CMOS settings correct,
and everything else as I know is working fine. I know
that when I had Windows 98, I had to disable "fast
shutdown" to fix this same problem. Is there a hidden
setting to fix this. I am new to XP so I haven't really
looked deep into it yet. Please help. Thank you.

My first thought is that you do not have the correct HAL installed. If your
computer is an ATX form factor, then it should be able to shut down the PSU at
the "..safe to turn off..." screen. If the "Standard PC" HAL is installed, then
I don't think Windows will even try and signal the motherboard to shutdown the
PSU.

Have you checked to see what type of "Computer" is listed in the Device Manager?

Go to Control Panel, open Power Options, then open APM
tab and there check box by Enable Advanced Power
Management support.Click OK and you should be able to
shut down without using power switch.
