After I click Shutdown, when the light blue screen appears, I have timed it at 92 seconds to shut down. That really seems like a long time to me, especially using a Laptop.

I am using a 2.8 Ghz Sony Viao PCG-GRV680P with XP Pro. Plenty of HD room, all defrag'd and as optimized as possible.

Is that the normal amount of time or is it doing something it shouldn't be doing?

If you have an nVidia video card you might try disabling
the nVidia Driver Helper Service in services.msc (Start,
Run, services.msc) . . .

Good Luck !

Hi, Frank.

You haven't told us what happens BEFORE you click Shutdown. If you have one
or more programs running (an open IE or OE window, perhaps), then WinXP must
exit that program before shutting down. If Word or Excel are running, they
need to close any open files they may have been using before they exit.
Other housekeeping tasks may also need to be done, either occasionally or
every time you shut down.
