my xp seems to take longer and longer every day to finally shutdown (up to 2
minutes) Is there anything I can do to fix this. (novice computer user)

I would also suggest running a disk cleanup and checkdisk:

Afterward, install the following:

If you have performed a lot of disk writes, they may be pending and have
to be written to the disk before the system can shutdown. Other causes
are whatever processes you have running might be slow to close. Check
the Task Manager's Processes tab before shutting down to see what all
you have loaded. The more you load on startup, the longer it takes to
startup. The more you have loaded when you shutdown, the longer it
takes to close it all.
