How can I get this to work properly?

You get these messages because Symantec dropped the ball.
Don't worry, they are trying to pick it back up.

The problem is with Symantec (Norton) Antivirus. Symantec acknowledges this
as a problem and has released and retracted a patch for the 2004 product
line once already. If you go to Symantec's web page and look here
(specifically):

http://snipurl.com/9aob

You will see that the 2005 product line already includes the necessary
patches/upgrade. The new release of the 2004 product line patch/upgrade is
expected sometime in late September/early October.

Hi

If you are not able to get the Security Center to recognise Norton
fully:

Control Panel/Security Center, click on the "Change the Way
Security Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.

More about Symantec products and SP2 here:

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/sp2/faq.html

For Norton 2004 products:

After installing XP Service Pack 2, the message "Your computer might
be at risk . . . " appears
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...613?OpenDocument&tpre=&csm=no&src=con_web_nam

For Norton 2005 products:

I think Norton 2005 have a tamper proof setting as default, and this
cases the Security Center to not detect NAV 2005.

Symantec Security Alert appears after running LiveUpdate or installing
XP Service Pack 2

Thank you for the help. I have nortons works 2003. Guess
it is time to upgrade.<g>

Don't spend money needlessly. You can go into Control Panel --> Security
Center and click on the "Recommendations" button for the Antivirus and tell
it "You will monitor the AV software".

Another option is upgrade to something free..

Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus (~$11 and up)
http://www.symantec.com/nav/nav_9xnt/

Kaspersky Anti-Virus (~$49.95 and up)

(Free Online Scanner: http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/)

AVG 6.0 Anti-Virus System (Free and up)

McAfee VirusScan (~$11 and up)

If you click on "Recommendations" there should be an option there that reads
something like "I will monitor virus protection status myself." Just make
sure that's selected. It has something to do with Symantec's anti-tampering
features in the virus scanner, or something like that. If you're running
2003, that's all you can do. If it's 2004 or 2005, a patch is on the way.
Either way, it's no reason to buy a new virus scanner.

Hi

Note this one:

Will this be fixed?

Symantec is planning an update, which will be available by
LiveUpdate. The update allows the Windows Security Center to
correctly identify the status of your Norton 2002/2003 security
products and give you the option of configuring how Norton
security products and the Windows Security Center alerts you.

When the update is available, this page will be updated.
