XP Service Packs

I've installed XP on my machine

I've found out there a SPs
- SP1
- SP1a
- SP2

Does SP2 include all the earlier SPs ? .. or do they have to be
installed seperately ?

Is there somewhere where I can download a SP and save it rather than
install it directly ?

Cheers

Search using Google!

Service Pack 2 for Windows XP is cumulative.
It contains all patches/hotfixes released before it was up until the date it
was released.
More detail needed?

List of fixes included in Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811113

You can download and save all updates for later use - including service
packs. You can even integrate those patches into your Windows XP
installation CD - so if you had to reinstall - you wold end up almost
fully-patched right fromthe beginning.

For service pack 2 in particlular:

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-may.mspx

July 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-jul.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

Unattended installation or cloning methods:

By CD/DVD...
http://unattended.msfn.org/

By network...

Your other choice might be to create a universal image - but I think you
would get more flexibility with an unattended installation.

You only need to install the latest service pack, SP2. You can
download the full version here:

Service Pack 2 is the only Service Pack you need to install
at this time since it supersedes all previous Service Packs.

I have a new Gateway computer with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with
SP2 installed. One of my old (favorite workhorse) programs will only run with
SP1. How can I download XP SP1 and then replace SP2 with the older service
pack?

You can't.

You can't. There is no way to uninstall SP2 from your current
installation.

In order to run Windows XP with only SP1 installed you would
need an installation CD that did not already include SP2. Even
if you could find one available for purchase, you're talking
somewhere between $200 and $300.

Have you tried running the Program Compatibility Wizard?
