When I try to download service pack 2 the istallation
always hangs up in the same place - Backing up Registry.
I have to use the task manager to end the program. I
have run several spyware programs and virus detection
before attepting the istall and I have attepted to intall
from a CD, but the result is always the same. Does anyone
have a suggestion?

Do you have Nortan Internet Security Installed on the PC? If so uninstall and
then try. Would also recommend not reinstalling it. Seems there is a conflict
between Norton Internet Security and SP2. I remember this after I had issues
with the two. Was mentioned in Beta, but nothing evidently was fixed about
it. I would also check that you have Administrative rights. I am assuming
that you do.

It appears that this is actually a security settings
issue. It is one that I haven't manage to solve yet. The
actual message appears similar to this though it may vary
depending on the install method.

"Service Pack 2 Setup could not backup Registry key
HKCR\Microsoft.update.Autoupdate to file C:\windows\$NT
ServicePackUninstall$\Reg00777. 5:Access is Denied."

I think that somehow the registry key for autoupdates may
have been deleted so that no one can use this backdoor to
install spyware, viruses, etc. Since this key must be
backed up SP2 hits a fatal flaw in the installation
process and hangs. So my recommendation is see if this
key exists in the system. If it does not it needs to be
reinstalled. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find
out the appropriate information to install in this key.

Unfortunately things have taken a turn for the worst.
After my last attempt to install SP2 my computer fails to
boot. I get the message that Windows can not start
because the file "\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" is
missing or corrupt. I then attempted to boot from the CD-
ROM that came with the computer (DEL), but I got the same
error message. I also tried booting from a floppy but
this failed as well. I have no idea if it is related to
the attempt to download SP2 or if it is some sort of
attack.
