Ive never been able to get my XP and Vista machines to see each other. after
messing with things for the last several hours, i finally got my XP machine
to atleast see my Vista machine and the shared C drive. Only prob with it is
when I access the C drive to view the contents, i get the popup saying I dont
have access or permission to open it. I dont have any passwords or logins on
either computer being they are both mine and mine only with no one else using
them. also the drive is shared and set to allow changes from other
computers. Also i have firewalls turned off. So whats wrong?

as a bonus, why cant my Vista machine see my XP machine? Ive done all the
standard checks like making sure both are accessing MSHOME, drives on both
ends are shared and allowing changing from anyone else, firewalls are down,
etc... and out of ideas. whats up?

It is not recommended to use blank password. This step by step troubleshooting may help,

I know but these are both my own computers in my own house with no roommates
or family or anything and i just hate having to deal with passwords when no
one uses anything but me. in a workplace i can understand but this is my own
stuff

Do you connect to the Internet? If the security is not issue, enable guest account on both computers. This link may give more details.
