XP says "no media" when CD is in drive

The only time XP recognizes a CD/DVD title is if the disk
is in the drive as the PC boots. Autoplay usually works
and Explorer can read/copy files without problems. Using
XP's Disk Manager, I notice it always says the drive
status is 'no media' even when a valid disk is present.

However, when doing updates to Microsoft products that
require the original CD be put in the drive to verify
ownership - inevitably Installer will bomb because it
cannot read a file from the drive.

I once thought the problem was a hardware issue with my
optical drive, but no longer think so as the symptom has
remained after upgrading the drive.

I suspect something in the Registry, but can find nothing
in the Knowledge Base. Any suggestions?

Download tweakui from the Microsoft site. Under the my computer section,
make sure that all of the drive letters are checked, especially the one for
your CD.

good thought, but not the problem. All the drives are checked.

Drive Management recognizes the presence of the DVD drive, but does not recognize that any media is inserted.

Seems to be a known problem - see article 817357. I think
the root cause is conflict with a network service, so
should really be a reg tweak. The patch is not
downloadable from MS. ChrisD
