XP running slow...

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if there is any other way to identify what process
(proceedure, program, etc...) is causing my system to run so slowly? In task
manager all I ever see is "system idle" running at 97-99%, and a couple of
others that occassionally go to about 2%. My page file usage never gets very
high, and my CPU usage generally peaks around 70% when opening apps then
drops back down to almost nothing.

This is a 1.8GHz with 256MB RAM. I'm running XP home edition with McAfee
(already tried disabling it) with Outlook and IE as my two main programs
running. Many times it takes at least 30 seconds just to open my apps. Why
is this so damn doggedly slow?

In MSINFO32.EXE about 4 SVCHOST sessions running. Two of which the path
info is "unavailable." Is there any way to identify what they are for and if
they should indeed be running?

Any other help would be greatly appreciated...

Sincerely,

Scott

4 instances of Svchost.exe you see in Task Manager is normal. Each
Svchost.exe process hosts a set of Windows Services, which you can determine
using the method listed in the following article:

Have you tried cleaning your temporary files and running the disk
defragmenter? Analyze the drive, if its fragmented, its likely thts
causing the slowdown in application response. Also you might benefit
from adding more RAM, make it atleast 512. Also keep the startup list
as light as possible.
Here's a guide

Thanks for the info...

Problem not solved, but you've given me some direction. THANKS!

Scott
