Have Win XP home edition with 256k memory, lots of hard
drive left 10gb. When I boot up from a total shutdown the
speed seems "normal" i.e. like when it was new. It
gradually slows down to a snails pace and takes up to a
minute to do the simplest task like sending an email
message or bringing up a program like Word. I have
defragged and scandisked and it does not seem to help.
Any one had something similar like this. It could be a
virus as I get a small window that tells me it cannot find
a file in the registry that is all "Greek". I click past
about four of these similar warnings and then get a normal
boot for a while and then slow again. Any suggestions
would be most appreciated.

Lee;
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
(Windows XP)
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up
Run Defrag.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:

I have to applaud the person who wrote that particular web page.
It goes to extreme ends to NOT tell you what the actual problem is
or how to tell if it applies to you or whether it will help you...

"This fix in the Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2003
heap algorithm was released to better handle a particular atypical and
uncommon sequence"

"an atypical sequence of requests can be tailored. In this instance, the
algorithm does not perform optimally."

"A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended
to correct the problem described in this article."

and finally

"Note This article was revised on 4/12/2003 to more accurately reflect the
specific purpose and details of the fix."

I'm glad I didn't see the original web page that wasn't as illuminating.

Also have you noticed how some sites do not tell you the
price of software until after you have entered your name
etc.? imdb.com has Pro version but try to find out how
much it costs. I asked via email address and got reply
two weeks later. $99.00 per year....good luck.

I had the same problem this week until I scoured my computer for
Symantec. Found Win Fax Pro and Ghost. Uninstalled everything
associated with Symantec and the change in performance was profound. I
used WF Pro recently and it apparently decided to take liberty with my
computer. I have long history with Symantec (ACT, WinFax Pro, Ghost
and several others.)These programs are intrusive and destructive and I
will never put them on my comp again. For your info I run XP Pro and
have no problems with software except Symantec.
