Does anybody know of a way in XP Pro to reinstall the O/S
on a non-bootable hard drive without losing the files?? I
don't care about the hard drive or programs, just the data
I had saved on it... I've got a second hard drive with XP
Pro in the system now, and when I try to put the dead hard
drive as a slave, it's not shown in My Computer. When I
try to Add/Remove Hardware, it says the hard drive is
already there and shows the correct info for it and says
it's working properly. So if anybody has any ideas how to
either restore Windows to a state I can boot and burn, or
how to get access to my drive in Windows through the good
drive, I would greatly appreciate it.

And I know this is going to be coming, so just to cut it
off before it starts... I had ordered backup software last
week on Wednesday, and my drive died on Friday before I
got the software... so I was attempting to back it up, but
didn't get a chance before it kicked the bucket

If you boot into your BIOS, does the system recognize the old hard drive,
after you changed the pin settings for slave?
Windows will not recognize any drive unless the system does first.

Yes, the setup repair option, when you boot the CD, will leave all your
programs intact.
Be sure you progress past the EULA agreement before selecting Repair.
