XP repair

Tried to do a repair from the boot CD on XP pro today and found that the
option to re-instal and retain settings was not there! Only get "delete
partition, convert to NTFS or leave File system as it is, then warning that
all settings will be lost! Is there a way out of this or am I faced with a
long re-install.
Any advice would be appreciated.
