I had to re-install Windows XP home after a problem in
which I had to re-install onto a new hard disk and then
start to transfer files etc from the old hdd to the new
one. However, I continue to get a message telling me that
Windows has to shut down because of the "Remote Procedure
Call". This is occurring about every 15-20 minutes adding
just another frustration with this OS.

You may have the Blaster worm or something similar -- though usualy Blaster
works much more frequently than this. In any case, go through the
troubleshooting here: http://aumha.org/win5/a/blaster.htm -- an early step
tells you how to change the RPC service settings to stop this problem while
you are confirming what it actually is.
