XP Remote Access Using Netmeeting

Joe Hardin

I have installed Netmeeting on a clean XP machine because I want to remotely
control the XP machine using a Win 2K machine. Netmeeting runs ok on the XP
machine, but it will not allow me to configure the Remote Desktop Sharing
utility. That option is greyed out. I know the XP machine will allow the
desktop to be remotely controlled because I do it from other XP machines.

Does anyone have any idea why Netmeeting is not allow me to configure the
Remote Desktop Sharing utility?

Thanks,

That's true if, as you say, he has XP Pro ... with XP Home it's not
available (which is, perhaps, why he's using NM).

Joe ... I'm confused by your phrase of 'I have installed NetMeeting' ... did
you download and install it from MS? NetMeeting is already available in XP
.... it's just not shown as an option by default but you can run it by going
to Start, Run and typing 'conf' ... or go to Explorer and find c:\Program
Files\netmeeting and creating a shortcut to 'conf.exe'.

If you already know all this, where are you having trouble configuring
Remote Desktop Sharing? Is it from the Tools, Remote Desktop Sharing menu
that it's greyed out? Or is it the Tools, Sharing option where the window
options are greyed out?

If you post back with more details, hopefully we can help ...

Yes, but if you read his post he clearly already controls the machine from
other xp machines so it must be xp pro. Here is the quote right from his
post:
"I know the XP machine will allow the desktop to be remotely controlled
because I do it from other XP machines."
If he does it from other xp machines 1- it has to be xp pro and 2 - remote
desktop is turned on and functioning.
Please read the actual post and not between the lines.

Well, I did read his post and, to me, it's not exactly clear if he used
NetMeeting from the other XP machines to go to NM's Remote Desktop Sharing
on his Host Computer and thereby 'control' the desktop ... or if he actually
used XP Pro's RDS.

So, I AM trying to 'read between the lines' and, therefore, cover all the
bases. Granted, terminology is always a problem and the definition of
'control' may be like the definition of 'is' (where have I heard that
before?).

Perhaps if he posts back with more details, we can give him a hand ...

Yes good point. Maybe I read between the lines a bit as well. It sounded to
me like he used remote desktop cause he didn't say netmeeting, but you're
right he didn't say rd either, he just said controlled remotely. I think we
can agree that the op needs to be more clear and post back with more info.
