My Dell came with XP Home pre-installed 2 years ago. The
hard drive finally crashed so since I have another PC
(ASUS) I got rid of the Dell to a friend who needed
parts. Well I use the re-installation cd for XP Home that
came with the Dell and installed XP Home on the ASUS. I
occassionally get blue screen error messages. According
to Microsoft's error report a device driver failed but
they don't know which one. All drivers are signed by
microsoft. Could this be because of the cd I am using. Is
this XP cd I have only compatible with the Dell computer,
or is it just a hardware configuration problem? Thank you
for your time.

That CD belongs to the Dell system. Aside from the license agreement that
prohibits using it on another system, such disks are often BIOS locked, that
is, tied to the hardware on which originally installed. Further, the CD may
have drivers and other files, specific to that Dell setup, specific to the
hardware on that setup.

I can't say a retail version will solve the problem, I can say, the source
of the problem may be easier to diagnose because we can rule out any
possible proprietary issues related to the CD and the Dell setup.

if XP came with the Dell, then when you gave away the Dell you gave away the
right to use that copy of XP, since it is forever tied to that computer by
the EULA.

Like glen said that is technically not a legal copy.....
Here is a solution that may help u... update all ur drivers... go to the asus site and download driver updates for the mobo also any cards u may have... video, sound , and network
