XP reinstall

Hi all, My computer stopped working after an electrical storm, I sent it to a
computer repair store where they had to change the motherboard, RAM, CPU and
graphics card. I had kept the hard drives at home because they had a lot of
sensitive data on. When they returned the computer they said I had to do a
reinstall of Windows XP?? Is this true and if so will I loose any of my
data??? Also if true how do I reinstall Windows XP??

Help please......annoyed

Hi Nish,

You will need to do a repair installation so that the system matches the new
hardware. Follow these steps to do a repair install which should preserve
your data, settings, and programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.

Why not try booting to the hard drive and see what happens? You might
have to 'reactivate' XP because of all the hardware changes, but that
sure beats a reinstall!

Hopefully, all you'll have to do is reactivate XP, and maybe reinstall
some device drivers.

Never backup your data onto a CD-R which makes it too easy to save in the
event of a HD crash.
Leave it on the HD and cry about it here after you lose it all.
