I've just been forced to reinstall XP whic has resulted
in previously installed software not working due to new
registration values. Among other things i'm prompted to
activate XP, even though i've already done this, and i've
lost several drivers and .dll files containing video
codecs.

I beleive the files are still on the computer but i don't
know how to get my "new" xp to rcognize them.

Anyone know if there's a way to use previous settings
after doing a reinstall of the os?? Is there some config
file or something that i can edit so that the computer
ses my old files?

Hi,

I,ve also just had my XP reinstalled and I was told that
if you don't back up all your work onto a disk or
something that everything will be taken off. The drive
has to be wiped before they can reinstall.

Did you do a CLEAN install or a REPAIR installation or some PARALLEL
install?

If clean - nope - you lost everything. Clean is when you boot from the CD
and you don't choose any sort of repair options and then create/format the
partition and continue installing.

Repair shoud have basically put you backwards to where you had no patches,
etc - you will have to repatch, download the latest drivers and possible
reinstall some apps. Most survive intact, depending on how dependent they
were on Windows being fully patched and/or just how integrated with the OS
they were.

Parallel would be obvious.. When it boots you would have a menu available
(possibly just for a split second) on which copy of XP you want to run.

None of them will really let you use old settings unless you exported them
manually before re-installing.

BTW - I noticed you gave your email (it looks real enough) - if so, expect
some spam increase in your inbox. Some may look like they are from
Microsoft, 99% of them will not be.. Never install patches unless you
downloaded them from a reliable source.
