Simon

I have an XP Home PC that continues to re-boot when it gets to the win logo.
I can access the HD by putting it into another PC, there are no viruses or
disk corruptions. Can anyone tell me how to manually get into the registry
to switch off the auto reboot on error option. I intend to do this from a
2nd PC with the problem disk as a slave. I have retrieved data this way so
I know it is possible.

A complete 101 guide would be good please, 10 yrs ago I could use edlin to
write a batch file in DOS 3.1 - today I don't even know where the registry
is stored or if it is one file or many.

Thanks for your help.

Simon

Auto reboot option can be found in system properties. Right click My
Computer > properties > advanced tab. Jym

Jym came up with this:

Can't you read? The OP cannot boot into the desktop, so how can he possibly
change any settings?

<shakes head>

Safe mode. Jym

If you have a retail copy of Windows XP , you can do a repair install. This
procedure will probably fix your problem and retain programs, files and
settings. This can be found within the XP bootable cd. Jym

Safe mode does not work either.

thanks anyway

Thanks again Jym, but this assumes there was a password set at initial
load - there was not and I have hit the known bug about doing a repair.

If I don't get a resolution by tomorrow I'll do a full reinstallation
anyway, just trying to save some time.

Thx

Is there no an option in the bios to switch it off. To ignore eror messages.
Or is this somthing am gettin mixed up with.

Gtting mixed up - the BIOS can be set that way. Type regedit in Start - Run and start help and look at Load Hive.

Look here in the hive you've loaded (of course you'll have given this location a different name in the process of loading)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl
and set AutoReboot to 0

OR
just read the error here if it's a blue screen
%SystemRoot%\Minidump (of course this referes to the hard disk not the machine you are using to view the hard disk)

Forgot to say where the hive is
By default, most hive files (Default, SAM, Security, and System) are stored in the systemroot\System32\Config folder. The systemroot\Profiles (not on XP even though this is from XP's help) folder contains the user profile for each user of the computer. Because a hive is a file, it can be moved from one system to another. However, you must use the Registry Editor to edit the file.

Remember that CurrentControlSet is a virtual key (only see it if XP is running) your's will be called ControlSet00n

I've run into this a number of times. A recovery console password has been set, and the owner doesn't have any record of it. Won't boot into safe mode, just gets stuck in the same reboot loop. All because Microsoft chose the wrong default.
