I have been using xp pro for about a year with few
problems. In the past week or so my computer has been re-
booting by itself, doesn't matter if I am on the net or
doing my homework, and it is getting worse. The only
software that has recently been installed is an update,
but I don't recall if this started before or after. I
even tried running it in safe mode and it still re-booted.
Can anyone help?

Open Control Panel - System - Advanced and click on the Settings
button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section.

In the Startup and Recovery window click on the checkbox for
Automatically Restart to clear it.

Click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

This will stop the automatic reboots. However they may be replaced by
Blue Screen Of Death STOP error messages. However in that case the
information from the STOP message will be a direct clue as to the
underlying cause of the problem.

Post the information from the STOP messages back to this newsgroup if
you need further advice or assistance with those.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice, but I had already done that. I
also checked the setup setting for power failure to not
start the computer. We have also scanned for viruses and
there are none.

That would indicate a serious hardware fault of some kind.

Possible culprits would include:

1. The computer's power supply
2. The motherboard and/or CPU
3. If the computer has a hardware reset switch (usually a small
pushbutton beside or just below the main power on/off switch) then
that has been known to become stuck or to malfunction.

One way to check for this last possibility is to remove the cover from
the computer case and disconnect the Reset wire that connects the
reset switch to the motherboard. This will be a two wire twisted
cable with a two pin connector that plugs on to the motherboard.
Usually the motherboard connector has the word RESET stencilled beside
it but not always. Note that there are several of these types of
connectors and removing the wrong one could cause other problems.
Check the motherboard documentation to make sure of the proper
connector.

Also note that many computers, especially major brands such as Compaq,
HP, and IBM, do not have a hardware reset switch so this possibility
would not apply to them.

Good luck

I did a system restore and so far so good.... if that
doesn't stop it, I have already ordered a replacement
power supply and then will check out switch if all else
fails. Thanks for the help!
