Windows XP XP Reboots when plug in network cable.

Hello, I am working with my friend and when we plug in his cable modem to the nic card the computer reboots.Gateway computer, cable internet. I am sure it is some kind of virus, Run norton, and still does it. I can not get it on the internet to download anything. Please help, and maybe one day I can help you. Thanks. Joe

NIC card?
have you tried not using the nic card and plug directly into the motherboard? i know its obvious, but it bears asking.
Also post up the system specs- this will help us out greatly.
