I decided to clear out my computer at one point a few days ago and see if I
could return it to essentially factory conditions, as it was when I got it. I
used the Windows XP recovery disc I was given by the computer manufacturer,
re-installed windows XP entirely, erasing everything on the computer except
for the most basic form of windows XP I started with. However now the laptop
will not read the internet at all, the High Speed and Wireless connection
networks originally listed in my Networks have vanished.
I never had to install anything special to use the internet before, but now
I have no connections and when I try to make one they never appear. The
computer just says it can't ever find an internet connection. I know the
internet is working, it works connecting to XBox Live and the old iMac I'm
using right now can read the internet, but the laptop no longer can. I have
tried every troubleshooting thing I could possibly think of and absolutely
nothing has worked.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

If I understand correctly, you installed the original version of
Windows XP over the existing version. That can cause problems if the
existing version had a service pack installed and you installed the
original version over it.

In that case, the solution is to re-install all service packs. If you
have a Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD, install it. If you don't,
download Service Pack 2 on another computer, write it to a CD or USB
flash drive, and install it on your computer. The download is
available here:

After that, run Windows Update repeatedly to get all of the updates
that have come out since Service Pack 2.
