I'm really new to XP, a freind of mine has it, i'm still running 98. When i
do msconfig and uncheck programs in start-up, (by the way, everything is
running) and reboot, they all come back? Am i suppose to disable systems
restore, uncheck running programs, reboot, then enable systems restore?
Second question is, what should remain running in startup beside's
antivirus, soundmixer, so on? I know on 98 what has to run, systemstray,
explorer, etc. XP is totally different? Thanks for your time!

For the programs that you unchecked in "MSCONFIG", but return after reboot. You should open these programs, go to their "TOOLS" or "OPTIONS" tab, and disable their "start when Windows start" (or words to that effect) feature.

Check out each startup item that you want to disable at
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm - there are usually
comments about how to disable an item or links to web sites with that
information.

Good luck
