What would stop it, and what can I do. The makers of the program refuse
to evolve the critical software...how do I get it working in XP.

Do I need a "1337" hacker and a hex editor?

You could try running the program in Compatibility mode. Right click the exe
file, select properties, select the compatibility tab. Check Run this
program in compatibility mode for:, then select the version of XP that the
program ran under.

I hope using compatible mode will work for you, but even if it does I
suggest you start now looking for a product that supports current operating
systems. You are going to have a problem some time in the future.

You could try running the program in Compatibility mode.

You could also try 'Run as Administrator', that sometimes helps. Also, you
could try putting it into the DEP exclusion list.

The other option, as someone else has said, is to install XP in a virtual
machine. Microsoft's own VM works fine for XP. If you need USB support,
try Sun's VirtualBox. I can recommend them both.

I personally would not allow a program to run that attempts to execute code
in the data segment by putting it in the DEP exclusion list. It's either
badly written or malware.

Disclosing the name of the app might help you get a meaningful answer...

I agree with Meehan.

I'm still using two old software packages on Vista: a map software package
that was written for Windows 98 and a simple accounting program that was
written for DOS/Win 3.1. Those two packages work OK with Vista with a couple
of quirks. I still use these packages because they do the job without the
extra bloatware/add-on plug-ins that some software have evolved into the past
ten years.

But I've also tried using some software that was written for XP that has
some big quirks on Vista. I've gotten rid of those and replaced them with
software that has been written for Vista. In the long run, software that was
poorly written and is not compatible across OS platforms is a waste of time
and money.

Meehan is right.
