I've just bought a Dell Inspiron1100, which is
preinstalled with XP Home Edition. Since I need to
read/write Japanese, I'd like to replace this with my
current Japanese OS (ME, Upgrade from 98). I consulted
with a technician at Dell, and was told it would be
impossible. Is it?

My next question would be: Can I obtain the Japanese
capability if I upgrade the XP HE to XP Professional?

Did this knowledgeable Dell technician say Why it would
be impossible? Probably not, because he didn't know. To
put it basic - every pc has a hard drive and every hard
drive has an operating system. Now every hard drive can
be formatted. What happens when you format the drive? You
destroy all the data that was on it, including the
operating system. This, in effect, leaves the hard drive
blank. All you need then is an operating system and you
can reinstall. I've formatted my hard drive and
reinstalled dozens of operating systems so how does a
technician say it's impossible? Of course many
manufacturers customise windows and also add extra, and
sometimes useless, utilities. It may be that the
technician is saying you can't reformat because you will
not be able to install the utilities with another
operating system. The only other thing i can think of is
that, as far as Dell are concerned, to reformat your hard
drive would invalidate any guarantee Dell provides.
Either way, No it is not impossible.
What you would need to do is reformat your hard drive
then, as windows ME was an upgrade from win98, you would
first need to install windows 98 and then upgrade using
your windows ME.
I believe a multilingual version of xp is available, but
am not sure of the cost. This type of version is usually
used by internation corporations. But, like win 98 and Me
you should be able to get a japanese version.

Hope this helps

Though I don't think Dells have this problem to much, you might run
into hardware problems because some Vendors use proprietary hardware and
it can be hard getting drivers.

Also, you will probably viod your Dell warranty. Which may or may not a
be a big deal to you.
