XP Professional won't boot

I am trying to help someone who was trying to connect his computer to
Sympatico broad band service. He in his zeal to get going, connected both
the ethernet and usb connections from the modem to his computer before the
installation software prompted him to do so. This resulted in a hung
computer that he pulled the plug on. Yes, he pulled the power plug out of
the receptacle. This has resulted in a computer that will only boot into
Safe Mode. Not even the earliest system restore point will allow normal
booting.

The system boots only to the first indication of XP booting up and then
there is a blank screen and nothing that can be done other than powering
down and then upon re-boot select and Safe Mode. It does boot in Safe Mode
but I cannot find the problem. There are no conflicts that I can find in the
Device Manager.

As he has just moved into his residence he cannot find his install cd for XP
Pro. I only have XP Home edition. If I can find an XP Pro cd, what would
you recommend as a course of action?

Is there anything that I can do to help this fellow out of his predicament?

Thank you.

Hi,

In Safe mode, run msconfig and use a diagnostic startup.

Hi Ron,

BTDT. Once you isolate the process that is causing the problem, resolving it
becomes a bit easier.

That is the first step in problem solving isn't it. If you can't identify
the problem and understand it how can you solve it.

Thanks for your help.

The computer wouldn't boot at all using the diagnostic boot and the XP disc
is nowhere to be found after the moving in and unpacking so, it is going off
to the local computer repair shop on Monday.

Thanks Rick for your input.

It isn't the fall that hurts:)

It's the sudden stop:(
