to load XP Professional. Can I get rid of this somehow
as its a real pain.

Hi Lance,

Was WinXP Pro installed? Any idea of how this originated?

Start/run C:\boot.ini

Copy/paste the contents into a reply.

Why would it do that? Is there some history on that computer that you
forgot to tell us about?

Dual boot scenario? What other operating systems? Boot manager, no boot
manager? Details about how this machine has been managed and how it has
arrived to where it is now would be helpful.

I'm wondering if you have an HP OEM installation of XP Home. At the startup screen mine gives me the choice between "Loading XP Professional" or "System Recovery Console." There is no option for Home. It then proceeds to load Home. I asked HP and their answer, while convoluted concerning boot files, etc., was essentially that I have Home and the startup screen is wrong. If all that loads is Home, that's all you have particularly if you're operating system recovery is in its own partition and you're operating system came pre-installed. I only have one install. If you have both installed, then you either have to uninstall one or make a choice at each startup. Personnaly, I have both on different machines and I'd stick with the Pro install.
