Can anyone help? i upgraded to XP pro from XP Home and now
all my network connections disappeared. when i tried to
reload them from the broadband CD it didn't overwrite
properly, so i tried to remove from control panel and
there is a dll (WINSTA i think) file missing and the
iKernel.exe file /program to remove programs would not
start so i can't delete the previous broadband software. I
then thought i could try a system restore and that doesn't
want to run either with some error message about restore
points (probably due to the upgrade). In backup there is a
restore point shown but i can't run it. So basically can't
delete program so i can connect to the internet and nor
can i get the system restore to work, HELP?

Evidently, the XP Pro CD that you used for the upgrade from
XP Home did not include Service Pack 1 and the previous
installation of XP Home did include SP1. When you did that
upgrade, you removed SP1 and all XP Critical Updates including
the one that deals with the RPC vulnerability exploited by the
MSBLASTER worm and its variants. Before you connect to
the Internet, make sure you are behind a router with a firewall
or have a functioning third-party firewall or have the XP ICF
enabled. Then you will need to immediately go to the Windows
Update site and get all Service Packs (SP1A) and critical updates
installed. SP1A will need to be installed separately and be sure
to reboot before going back for the rest of the critical updates.

This article will restore your DSL connection:
