One of our offices is having a problem with email confidentiality. We are
using pegasus mail. We are not using Active Directory they are just in a
workgroup. I went to the mail server and I added everyones username and
password onto the server. Then I only gave everyone access to the folder that
their emails were in. I also gave them access to the folder that the email
program is contained. but when I run the email program It will not let them
in, it is almost like the mail server is not recognizing the user. Is there a
way to tie the two accounts together or should the mail server just recognize
the windows logon from the remote computer? Also now that I have given them
all a username and password the shared printer one of the workstations will
not work. If I change everyone back to "user" then everything works fine. Now
that I have made these changes I cannot get it back to the way it was. it
does not work at all now. What is going on can anyone help?

Thanks,
Ray

This might be something specific to your mail server software. You can see
whether the credentials are being passed through to the server by
browsing/opening a folder on the server - if you aren't prompted for
credentials, you're not having authentication problems.

Active Directory :)

Can't say what Pegasus Mail Server wants/expects.

What do you mean by "will not work" ? Won't print? Or, nobody can print to
it from across the network? What are the permissions set on the printer on
that computer? Have you added all the same users/passwords to this computer?
You need to.

Honestly, maintaining a network like this would annoy the __ out of me. You
don't mention the number of computers you have, but with more than just a
tiny handful, I don't like to use workgroups. If you have a Windows server
OS already, why not set up a domain so you can manage everything centrally,
let people change passwords without your having to run around to all the
computers and change stuff around?

I also prefer networkable printers, or at the very least, attaching the
printer to the server (not a workstation) to share it. Just my $.02.

It took some time to figure out but I think I have the problem. If the person
connecting to the computer did not have a password on their account then the
host machine would not authenticate them. This is a bug that was fixed by
removing a security update. I removed the update and everything worked fine.
Thank You for taking the time to helkp me.. Have a good one
