I installed a CD I purchased, but the installation did
not work due apparently to the CD being damaged. The
systems boots with Windows XP, but it freezes on the
window displaying the users' names.

I tried to go back to Windows 98, but the system wouldn't
let me or I didn't do it right. Anyway, I got a new XP CD
from the vendor and I tried to install ti install it from
the CD. Files are copied, the previous version of Windows
is deleted and it tries to restart. When it tries to
install Windows, the message c:Windows root\system 32
\hal.dll file is missing. Copy the file and try again.

I tried the installation process several times and the
same thing happens. Any advice? Thanks in advance

By the way, I tried to contact MS Support but they want
the product key. If I can't install the product, how can
I get the product Key? Very frustrating!!!!

I believe the Product Key is located in the Windows XP box.

You should be able to at least install fresh to a new formatted partition.
