My expectation of xp pro. was that it would be faster
than pervious windows, windows 98 / 98 second eddition
was much faster, any tip's on zapping xp into faster mode?

That would depend on your hardware - if you've installed XP on a P233 with
64MB RAM and a 3GB HD, then, obviously 98 would have been faster.

So, if you're really running XP on such outdated and outmoded hardware then
the only tip there is would be to purchase a new system.
 
As Epona has stated, without knowing anything about your hardware and what
applications you are running it's impossible to answer the question.
