Hi,
Recently had a computer given to me by a friend.
After I coupled every thing up, i was asked if I wanted to update windows.
When I had done so, there was and still is a message saying that I could have been the victim of software counterfitting.
I have asked my friend but he says he as no idea what it means.
Can any one tell me what this is and what if anything I can do to sort this problem out

many thanks

if you inputed a serial key..looks like you were beaten to it :)

It sounds as if the computer your friend gave you has a pirate copy of Win XP installed on it.

When you attempted to install latest updates Microsoft recognised it as an iffy copy and gave you that message and also refused to give you the updates.

Ask your friend for the original certified legal copy of Win XP.

If he hasn't got it you're either going to have to put up with that message permanently or buy yourself a copy of Win XP.

We don't condone piracy on this forum so please don't ask for any ways around your current problem.

Thanks all,
thought it was all a bit iffy when my friend said he knew nothing.

Yep you deffinately had a counterfit windows on there, when windows updates itself theres one update that checks if your windows is legit, you will HAVE to go and get a new copy because now it knows you are on a dodgy copy if i remember right you are on borrowed time before windows stops working all together, my friend had a similar problem with a PC he bought off a friend, its easier if you actually purchase a new copy through the screen itself that tells you about your dodgy copy then it just does a file check to make sure everything is in order and works from then on and you dont have to install everything again from scratch.

Cheers Lee.
