Hi, this is my first question in this forum. I'm looking forward to finally
having a place to go for help with my questions. I have a lot, lol!! But
this one is really pressing for me: 2 days ago my computer stopped working.
I shut it off when I went to bed and it wouldn't boot up the next day. I
have over 160 gigabytes of music on it, most of which is not backed up, so i
freaked! I finally bit the bullet the next day and decided to reinstall Xp
in the hopes it would at least boot up, knowing I would lose half my music by
taking this action (I have 2 hard drives). However, my copy of Xp (on disc)
won't repair itself, nor will it now boot up. It seems I may have sacrificed
a large portion of my database for nothing. The reinstall gets to 91% before
it says certain dll files are not there or are damaged. I don't know what to
do at this point and at present am without my desktop. Does anyone have any
suggestions? If I haven't provided enough information, what else should I be
saying here? I really want my computer back, as I just spent 2 months fixing
it after somebody nearly ruined it. I was so proud of all I'd accomplished
and then suddenly, boom, it's not working again. Which reminds me, I didn't
do any major changes to it the day before it stopped working.

You really haven't given us anything very specific to work with. About
the best I can do is guess that the installation fails because it cannot
copy some unnamed files.

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective, incompatible, or sub-standard hardware;
in order of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard.
It'll most likely be the same component that caused your friend's
original problem. On very rare occasions the CD drive or installation
CD is the problem.

Start with testing the RAM. You might try MemTest86:
http://www.memtest86.com/ It's free. Then you can download and use the
hard drive maufacturer's diagnostic utility to test the hard drive. If
both RAM and hard drive test out clean, check with the motherboard
manufacturer for any diagnostic utilities.

I agree with Bruce. This is likely faulty hardware. You should be able to
recover your files by removing the hard drive and attaching to another
system that is running Windows XP.
