I have XP home edition on a Dell 8250. Lately (one month)
I have been unable to get to any restore points of the
last 3 months. In addition when I start programs such as
Norton antivirus it only runs for a few seconds and
then "disappears" Today I tried to install MS Office 2003
and the product key log in screen only was visible for
about 5 seconds so I could not enter the 25 characters!
<sigh>. I reinstalled XP yesterday to see if it would
solve the first problem but it still is going on. Any
ideas or directions would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
John

John;
You possibly have a virus.
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
(Windows XP)
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up
Check this link:
http://www.aumha.org/a/noads.php
Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

Otherwise check for and replace damages system files
Start/Run
Type "cmd" ENTER
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have Windows XP CD available.
