XP problems

My pc has started exhibiting the following problems, can anyone offer any
advice:

1. When I open My computer just shows the searching torch symbol. It loads
up eventually but only after several minutes.
2. Windows addresses need to be typed into the address bar starting with
http:// ie if you start with www. nothing happens.

My son uninstalled SP2 and reinstalled it, he says that this took an hour or
so and the pc seemed to be OK. Since then the problem has reappeared for no
apparent reason.

I have tried running "sfc /scannow" in case any hidden Windows files were
damaged but it has made no difference either.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards
Mike

Do a system restore to a point before sp2 installed and then install again,
if all OK.

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing a really frustrating problem.
Windows won't recognize most .exe files after installing a new version
of Norton AntiVirus. A window pops up that says the file or path could
not be found, when I know the path is definitely right and the file is
where it belongs.
I cannot access the Control Panel nor Opera nor the Windows Explorer.
Strangely enough, IE works, and music files can be played when clicked
on directly, so the programs all work, most of them simply cannot be
found.

I cannot find any information about this problem anywhere, the last
similar post is from 1998 about Win95. Am I blind or just very
unfortunate?

Appreciate any help.

Hi, I know this is a follow up to an old posting. However, can I offer this
help for other Searchers to this kind of problem.
After a long time, I decided to upgrade to SP2 and then found I could not
explore files (constant Torch symbol) and IE was not responding to typed in
addresses. The solution (in this instance). I have a Canon MPC 200 printer
(it's a printer, scanner and card reader) it seems to emulate a network to
access the different functions. I suspect it was the card reader function
that caused the problem. Unplugging the printer fixed the problem. So found a
Patch on the Canon site.
Now everything OK.
I do not think this problem is limited to Canon but may be the same for
simliar devices (for example, card readers). I suggest that if you are
suffering with similar problems that you unplug these devices- just leave the
basics plugged in (keyboard, monitor, etc) and see if it cures the problem.
If the problem goes away (I suggest you do a Restart to check properly) then
you you can re-plug the devices back in to see which is causing the problem.
Then (assuming this identifies which device is causing the problem) you need
to look for a patch.
Hope this helps. Terry - danmat.com
