XP problems

I am having really strange problems with my XP (now at SP2). When you boot
up the final element takes a long time (I know this because the last thing
it does is to give an error mesage re Servicent.exe and this appears
sometime after switch on).
When you try to open my computer you just get the moving torch symbol for
sometime and trying to use the Internet Explorer drop down address list
causes the egg timer to be displayed.
This problem seems to be intermittent ie sometimes when you boot it the pc
works OK but other times the problems appear.
Has anyone else encountered this problem and can they let me know how it can
be solved ?

It's slightly possible that this will help:

Go to Start/Run, and type: REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL Then open IE, Tools menu,
Options, Program Tab, and click the "Reset Web Settings" button.

OR

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW
