I have purchased a new laptop loaded with xp home.
when i try to download pop mail, the compt shuts down
with the message remote procedure .... NT/authoity/Sytem
shut down...

Please let me know how to sort out the problem..

To stop the reboots: Go to Start/Run and type in: services.msc. Scroll down
to Remote Procedure Call (RPC)/Recovery/First Failure/Restart the Service.

Close Windows Explorer, run the edit on line 257 which includes the prompt
for the patch once your system has been cleaned.

This script removes all variants of the W32.Blaster.Worm (original, B, C, D,
E and F) and will inform you whether or not the patch is already installed.

I have encountered a similar problem on boot up. In the
60 seconds I have before auto shutdown, I can get about 5
attempts in to "stsrt" said RPC, and keep getting the
same message. WHY the h3ll does XP "HOME" even have all
this "administration" crud?
Anyone know if theres some way this unnecessary stuff can
be bypassed?

You have the lovsan(blaster) virus. There are many anti-
virus sites that have cleaners on them for this but that
only solves your problem temporarily. If you are still
getting this after the virus has been on the internet for
months than your computer is not configured for safety
while surfing. The Windows Updates site now has a three
step tutorial right on the site instructing you how to
make your computer safer. Activate your firewall in the
control panel\network connections. Use a good Anti-Virus
program. For now you will need to go>start\control
panel\administrative tools\services and scroll down to RPC
and then double click it to open its configuration
windows. Click the recovery tab and make a note of the
settings on all three recovery lines. Now click the drop
down list arrow to the right of each line and
select "restart the service" and then click your way out.
Now this will allow you to remain on the internet long
enough to go and have your computer cleaned at somewhere
like www.sarc.com . Keep smiling.

You have somehow got the Msblaster Virus due to from what
you have given it is the I guess you could say symptoms,
I hope that helps, Simply update your Norton.
