I purchased xp pro for a laptop I than installed on the
computer a about 6 weeks later computer died I just
purchased a new laptop am I allowed to put on the windows
xp that I purchased

Depends. If it was a retail licence then yes, of course. If it was OEM
(either came with another system or a piece of hardware) then no, you're
not. An OEM licence is tied to the system it came with/was first installed
on and cannot be moved to any other system.
 
It was a retail version of xp pro wont I still have to
activate it and if so I thought it was for one computer
only and this is why I am asking Thanks for the help
 
You can install it only on one computer, but if it blew up, or you had to
reformat it and put it on another one instead cause it was not working
properly on the first then it is alright. Long as you only have one working
copy on one single computer, it allows you to do this...you will just have
to call the activation line and tell them what has happened to your first pc
and get them to help you manually activate it on this new pc.
