I thought you could download XP Pro x64 to try before you buy?
Has this been discontinued? Just can't seem to find the link.

Apparently it has. See "Trial Software" on this page:

Don't see it on my ISPs server, must be internal to MS then.

NO! Microsoft's public newsgroups are available to anyone. It just
that not every ISPs will load it onto their Usenet servers (some ISPs
no longer offer Usenets also.)
Microsoft also has their own "public" newsgroup server. Try adding it
to your newsgroup reader:

BTW: Why would you think XP Pro x64 would fix a problem with Vista
x64? Vista x64 came out after XP Pro x64 as a product. XP Pro x64
can only be purchased as OEM.
------
Real simple. I have a newer machine, came with Vista Premium x64 OEM
preloaded and added 4GB RAM, video card and a 2nd drive. A few performance
patches and SP1 have been applied. Q6600 G33 chipset with 8GB RAM and a
GeForce 8500 GT, 2 x 500 GB SATA disks. I have everything working fine
except for the following issues:
Network copy (in or out). Using FTP or pscp.exe I can't get more than 5mbs
on a 100mb network and it takes a long time. It is on a 100BT network. I
have tried numerous fixes outline on the MS network trouble shooting. Have
also tried updating the drivers from Intel's site. Nothing seems to work to
fix it. So I opened up Solaris 10i in a VM and the same copy takes much
less time, indicating it isn't the driver. HTTP downloads from the internet
also seem slower, even though I allowed Vista to bypass the proxy.
Next, large file copies between disks. A disk to disk copy on my older XP
using 160GB ATA 133 drives takes some 2-3 minutes. Copy of the same file in
Vista disk to disk, 18 minutes but it has newer SATA drives. And beforeSP1
was applied it was worse, 44 minutes.
One final issue, getting Vista working with Samba/CIFS seamless was an
exercise in futility. I did get it partially working, but don't like how I
had to do it. I can't get the GUI to map the drive with user ID no how
using workgroups, but could get it mapped using the net command and telling
samba a guess was OK. Registry hacks didn't work and no policy editor.....
So, I wanted to try XP Pro x64 as I don't want to buy it and find out it
doesn't work either. Leaves me with 2 options, try XP Pro x64, or load
Linux with a VM to get XP... as I need a working MS-Windows... and XP may
be better anyway as all my current customers don't support much Vista
anyways.
So that sums it up. The old XP desktop and laptop get to stay XP and get a
reprieve. And I have decided I am not ready for Vista. Ya, I know I could
torrent a copy, but it isn't my style.- Hide quoted text -
