I have been using a workgroup with Windows 2000 on all my
computers. File Sharing has been easy. Now I have two
new notebooks which originally came with XP Home
installed. I upgraded to XP Pro to obtain the security
features I needed to share files in a workgroup. I can
access the Windows 2000 computers from XP Pro but the
other direction is not possible. Simple file sharing is
off, no software firewall is present and I still get the
no access message with every attempt to connect to the XP
Pro machines. How do I get my workgroup working again
with the XP machines?

Did you add the users of the Windows 2000 machines to your XP Pro machines?

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
