I want to share files between two xppro boxes connected by utpcable There is
no domain just WORKGROUP. Each box using apipa. Sometimes i can access the
other box, other times not, it seems a very inconsistent thing.
Both boxes ping each other just fine but I always get access permission
errors.
I have tried using the network setup wizard but I would also like to be able
to do this manually.
Why is it so hard?
Can anybody please help me,
Thanks,
Pat.
Yo Pat, here is a file I created explaining what I think is your problem,

Setup a Network without Simple Sharing
======================================
Created by Louis 07/07/2003
Hi All,
I created this help file to help ppl setup their networks without Simple
Sharing, since
there is no reference to disabling Simple Sharing in the XP help files and
less on the
website.
If your network is working 100% and you just want to be able to set
permissions, skip to
Step 3.
Step 1:
=======
1) I assume that you have 2 machines running XP and both have network cards
2) I assume that you have a 100% tested and working UTP pc2pc cable
connected
Step 2:
=======
1) Right Click on My Computer, choose properties and click on the Computer
Name Tab.
2) Click on the Change button and give the machines names, set the workgroup
to ie.: MSHOME
3) Click OK, now Right Click on My Network Places and click on Properties.
4) In the Network Connections Screen, Right Click on Local Area Connection
and choose Properties.
5) Ensure that the following is installed:
5.1) Client for Microsoft Networks
5.2) File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
5.3) TCP/IP
If one/all of them are missing install using the Install Button
6) Click on TCP/IP and choose the Properties Button
7) Click on Use the following IP address and set machine1 to 192.168.0.1 and
machine2 to 192.168.0.2
8) Apply and Close all the screens till you are back on the desktop.
9) Testing: Click Start then Run and type PING 192.168.0.2 from machine1, if
you get replies, all is good
10) Request timeouts? Then run the Network Setup Wizard and then start at
Step2.6.
Step 3:
=======
1) Open My Computer, Click Tools - Folder Options
2) Click View and scroll down the Advanced settings, at bottom is Use simple
file sharing, UNTICK it.
3) Click apply and ok. Simple file sharing is disabled now and permissions
are set.
Step 4:
=======
1) Right Click My Computer and click on Manage.
2) Click on Local Users and Groups and then click Users, on the right pane,
all the users will appear.
3) Right Click on open area in the right pane and choose new user.
4) Choose a user name: (keep it simple ie.: LAN) and set a password.
5) Checkboxes Checklist:
5.1) User must change password at next logon : UNCHECKED
5.2) User cannot change password : CHECKED
5.3) Password never expires : CHECKED
5.4) Account is disabled : UNCHECKED
6) Leave the rest of the setting alone (too advanced for newbs,sorry) and
click CREATE.
Step 5: (The goodies, setting the permissions)
=======
1) Go to the folder you would like to share. Right click it and click on
Sharing and Security.
2) mmm Something has changed hasn't it. Ok click on Share this folder and
click on permissions.
3) Remove the EVERYONE Group by clicking the Remove button. Click the Add
button.
4) Without clicking @ Enter the objects name to select, type: LAN and press
ENTER.
5) You will be returned to the previous screen with your LAN account active
on the share.
6) Set the permissions you would like the LAN users to have on the folder.
and click Apply and Ok.
7) Click Apply and OK.
8) Testing: From the other machine (lets say machine2) Open My Computer for
instance and in the address
bar, type: \\192.168.0.x (where x is the destination machine) and press
ENTER.
9) If all is well, you will receive a Login. Type LAN (group account) and
the password that you gave the group.
10) You will be logged into the machine and be able to use the files shared!
This file was created and typed in less than 30 minutes.
