XP Pro: wireless connection does not connect during bootup

Hi all,

With WinXP Pro SP1, XP WPA patch and Buffalo WLI-CB-G54
NIC connecting to 54G Access Point on latest drivers and
firmware.

As soon as I enable WPA encryption on the AP and NIC, I
cannot connect to the access point during the Windows boot
process. Although the PCMCIA card initialises without
problem, the link is not made to the AP hence I cannot
logon to the network (2000 Server).

If I boot XP, then plug in the NIC, the connection is made
successfully, or if I boot XP and remove then re-insert
the card again the connection is made successfully and I
can logon to the network.

If I have no encryption on the wireless, the network
connection is made successfully during the XP boot process
and I can logon to the network. Only when encryption (be
this WEP or WPA based) the wireless connection is not made
successfully during the XP boot process.

This is very wierd behaviour. Can anyone shed any light
on the situation for me?

Thanks,

Chris

Bumping this up to the top again as the issue is causing us
major problems rolling out a fleet of wireless laptops.

I'll be the first to tell you I don't know crap about this but correct me if
I'm wrong it sounds like the connection is being made before the encryption
program is started. Here again I don't know but can you make a file or
change a registry setting to either force the program to start earlier or
that connection later??

Hi,

I don't see what programs I can do that with, since XP
[prepares the nwtrok connections' during bootup but doesn't
manage to prepare this wireless one when encryption is enabled.

There are a few mentions of this style of issue in the MSKB
but they imply the fixes are only available firect from MS
and you may have to pay support fees to get them.

It's really bizarre, and I'm no closer to resolving the
problem. I have contacted Bufallo support but crikey knows
how long it may take to get a response! In the meantime I
have 22 laptops that Im not willing to roll out until I get
this issue resolved!

Regards,

Chris

FYI, add an all Linksys wireless network to the issue.
W2K works fine, but my wireless-g notebook adapter and
two wireless-b usb adapters only work when WEP is
disabled. Doesn't seem to matter when I plug them
in/turn the PC on, etc. It only works with WEP off.
That means MS changed something between W2K and XP, and
they broke it across multiple different hardware brands.
I wonder if it works fine with MS wireless stuff...?
