I have a virus which I could not eliminate. I applied the patch KB823980 and
now the system will not boot. Any advice? I can get to the boot up screen
and then the system just won't boot up to the log on screen. The mouse
doesn't hang. The OS is WinXP Pro. There are no error messages. The hard
disk light comes on every few seconds but nothing happens. Should I replace
the registry or could one of the boot files such as winlogon.exe be corrupt?
Thanks in advance.

A virus can do bad things to an OS, any OS for that
matter, do you know the name of the virus affecting your
system?

David,

No I can't identify the virus. I know it's a virus due to an odd executable
in the run sections of the registry that when I try to delete it comes back
both places. The file is kjdjdbb.dll. I tried to find and delete these
files, then replicate themselves. I'm not sure if it's a virus or trojan
though.

Thanks for your interest,

Bob

when your system first starts hold down the f8 key
once that screen comes up select safe mode with networking(so you can still
access the net if needed) this only loads the bare min for your computer to
actually function. Once in put you xp disk in and cancel it's request to
install or other stuff. now type sfc /scannow (yes that is a space bettween
sfc and the / this will check to make sure you registry is intact. once that
is done go to google and search for Ad-Aware and download the free version,
also look for spyboot, and download that as well
they are programs that search out spyware on you pc and allow you to delete
it. now do a full system scan with norton Av or whatever you have. if all of
this does not work turn off the pc boot again when it says to hit a certian
key to enter setup do so once in change your boot order to boot from cd-rom
first then put the xp disk in and cancel it's actions now reboot and it
should give you a repair option from there. if all else fails you will have
to do the same boot from the xp disk and reinstall windows .
If this is not a full version of xp you need to have you previous full
version disk to as it will ask you for it

You should have a virus scanner that can make a positive
Id of any virus, if you don't, you should get one. The
search I ran on the dll file on Symantec's (NAV) site
turned up nada, so it's not a known virus.

If your sure you have a good registry copy, it may be the
only way to restore the system to a better point in time.
