Hey Everyone,

I have a customer that requires a new data server w/ backup and currently
use windows XP Pro for Nightly backups.
Does anyone know if vista Business has the same type of backup (nightly)
that can be configured better then the Vista HP Version. IE Backup items
that are not located in the User Folder.
Also, for the remote desktop does the connecting computer have to be vista
aswell?

thanks in advance for your help.

You say "data server" yet mention only workstation operating systems...

Assuming that NTBackup is what you mean they are using/scheduling...

and

For getting back data from theolder version once the switch to Vista is

Thanks Shenan

I have used this setup before for different clients and worked fine. ie
Mirrored Harddisk, and using NT Backup for nightly backups to either flash or
removable harddrive.
My question is, how can i get the Vista Verison of backup to
a) backup files not located in the user folder
b) backup files from different network shares ie email database from a
different pc.
windows XP Pro scheduling NTbackup worked fine for me with this before and
from what i can see now and am not able to do this. (Provided i am not
missing some feature of Vista Business)

thanks

Hi Lee,

As far as I am aware Windows backup (Vista Buisness/Ultimate and Server
2008) does not allow for the flexibility NTBACKUP did. You have to backup by
volume, however you can restore individual files. There is a few cool
features that come with this backup app, such as recovering applications
(applications that Windows Backup recognises) and the fact that it does block
level backups and vss, therefore only backs up the changes with in individual
files, this enables for speedier backups. The GUI only allows you to backup
to a local drive or removeable media i.e. local hdd, flash drive, external
HDD.

However if you need to backup to the network you will need to use the
wbadmin command line interface
