Hi, If I was going to upgrade from Windows 98 to XP pro,
which version would be recommended? What are the
differences? Can I upgrade with the full version of XP
Pro?
Thanks!

The only difference between the Upgrade version and Full version is the
Upgrade version requires a qualifying product be present to satisfies it's
request during installation. If you have a Windows 98 CD then the Upgrade
version is a good choice because it is less expensive. You can do a clean
install with the Upgrade version by simply supplying your Win98 CD when
prompted.

Even though it does not explicitly state it on the packaging you can do an
upgrade with a Full version.

Use the upgrade version.

If you qualify for the upgrade, that's what you should get, since
it's considerably cheaper.

Either version can do either a clean installation or an upgrade.
There's only one difference: if you do a clean installation with
an upgrade version, you will have to insert a previous qualifying
version's CD as proof of ownership when prompted to do so.

Be careful not to confuse the full version with the OEM version.
The OEM version can *not* do an upgrade.

If you can afford it I would go with the full version of WinXP Pro and do a
clean install rather than an upgrade. (eg back up all data, settings and
email, reformat HD, re-install Windows).

You can upgrade but read too many posts along the lines of "I tried to
upgrade from xyz to winXP and boo hoo happens".

You do need to think carefully about what else you need...

Are there WinXP drivers available for your.. printer, scanner etc? Check the
makers web site first.

Is this a good time to upgrade MSOffice etc?

Do you have any DOS programs that you simply must have working?

Are there any programs you use that you have lost the keys for (see if the
program will tell you the key before you try and upgrade).

Is this a good time to fit a larger HD?

Is this a good time to get a better PC?

Why - when a clean installation can be performed with the upgrade licence?
Just because it's marked 'Upgrade' doesn't mean it can only be used for
installing over an existing operating system. You're advising him to waste
£200.
