I recently bought a HP computer that came with XP Home. I
tried to upgrade to XP Pro using MSDN XP Pro that I
have. It went through the first part and then complained:

"Cannot locate the windows installation you want to
upgrade. Contact your system administrator".

I searched the knowledge base and found an article
related to Windows 2000. None of the recommendations
have worked.

Anyone has seen and overcome this before?

Thanks in advance...

As far as I know, XP Home is not a qualifying product for the XP PRo
upgrade. I believe you will have to do a clean install, or if you have
a Windows 2000 or Windows 98 cd, you can put it in the drive during the
XP install to qualify for the upgrade.

Some XP Professional upgrades will NOT update XP Home
edition. It states right on the box which operating
systems it will upgrade. I have ran into this problem
before. Some will upgrade XP Home to Pro and some will
not. Look at the box before you purchase it.

The only XP Pro that won't upgrade Home is the OEM version. All retail
versions of Pro will upgrade Home. All OEM versions are for clean installs,
and will not upgrade anything. The retail box of Pro doesn't list Home as a
upgradeable version of Windows; maybe MS didn't think people would be doing
it.
