I am working on trying to network a new Dell 600m running
XP Pro to a HP desktop running XP Home. The dell has
Centrino, so I am using the built-in 802.11b, and the HP is
wired to the Dell Truemobile Router. Both PC's can access
the DSL service, but the Dell cannot see any shared
folders, or even the workgroup that the PC's are on. The
HP, however, can see the Laptop, and the workgroup. I have
double checked (numerous times) to assure that the
workgroups are the same, but they still will not network.
I have also disabled the firewalls on both machines, but
the laptop still cannot see the desktop.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
