XP-Pro/SP1 & W2K server connections

I've just upgraded? my Windows 98SE machine to XP-Pro/SP1 and applied
all the patches & updates, including the latest network, sound & video
drivers. The installation went smoothly. I was able to join the W2K
domain and I can log on OK with my user id.

I am however having one MAJOR headache. My connections to the shares on
the W2K server are not working properly (connections to shares and
printers on Linux servers work properly). What is happening is:
- I can't connect to shares using just my user name and password
- I can't connect to shares using domain\username & password
- I can connect using username@domain with my password, but the
connections are glacial.
- shares don't reconnect properly when I log on. In fact, until I go to
a command prompt and "net use d: /d" to each of them, XP is useless -
response time is measured in minutes and it appears (but isn't) frozen
for extended periods. With no W2K shares connected, XP runs fine.

I tried uninstalling MS networking and re-installing it, but that had no
affect.

Any ideas?

It appears this problem is quite common. I "upgraded" another system and
ran into the same problem. I did find a solution however. The solution
is to remove all the network components then remove the machine account
from the domain.

After rebooting the XP computer, reinstall the networking components.
Finally, use the System Properties | Computer Name | Network Id wizard
to join the computer to the domain.

After doing this, things work OK. Why XP can't get it right the first
time is beyond me.
