XP Pro - Slow Startup

Since purchasing a new PC with XP Pro OS, the startup and
close downs are becomming progressively slower.

I have added less than 30 additional programs, such as
Winzip, Adobe Reader 6.0 etc. In other words, small
utility programs with the exception of MS Age of
Mythology.

Is there a quick way to speed up the startups and shut
downs, which initially were super quick compared to 3
months ago when I first purchased the computer?

Are all of these loading at startup? They shouldn't be -- but programs you
mention do try to load at startup. That, then, is the first thing to check.
Click Start, click Run, type MSCONFIG, click OK, click the Startup tab, and
uncheck everything you don't need to have already running when the computer
comes up. More permanently, you can consult this discussion of all the dozen
or so places from which items can be launched at startup:

Next, you may have jammed up temp file caches. Go to my Computer Health
page -- http://aumha.org/a/health.htm -- and at least do Step 4, "Taking out
the trash." Consider doing the other steps also.
