hi,i have an old P3 system running xp pro for some time with no
problems.Today i find that i cant shut it down. When i hit the shutdown
tab it starts to shut down then restarts?
I have run an anti virus program and ad-ware and it comes back all
clean with no viruses etc.
The PC is on a wired network in my house connected via a netgear
router.
I seem to remember that some time ago a virus was doing the rounds that
shut down and restarted your PC
I am running AVG/Ad-Ware/Windows Firewall.Regards Mark.

Mark,

I would suggest that you try the same sequence in Safe
Mode as well.
Steps to get in Safe Mode:
Tap the F8 Key while the computer is restarting,
select "Safe Mode" from the startup options.

If this works fine, then its most likely a
driver/software/hardware which is causing this problem.

To Isolate it, you may try disabling some hardware
components from Device Manager and check after disabling
each device. Try disabling only the following devices:
1. Network Adapter
2. Display Adapter
3. Modem

These are the common devices that cause such problems to
come up.

If this does not help, you may try disabling STARTUP GROUP
items by the following steps:
1. Start --> Run -->MSCONFIG
2. Under Selective Startup, Uncheck "Load Startup Group
Items"

Hope this helps

Since it just started today, you might try using System Restore to take your
system back to a time prior to when this began. Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

If that fails to resolve it, have a look at the following site for possible
help with this issue:
