Have XP Pro. When trying to shut down everthing goes off but power light and
get a message stating that windows has shut down to keep from damaging
computer. Has info how to go into safe mode then tech info message at bottom.

stop: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF7C43DAB, 0XF28D99B0,0XF28D96AC )
nv_agp.sys-address F7C43DAB base at F7C4300, Date stamp 3d7903e1

At this point puter will shut off if I push the power button with no ill
affects.

Any help very appreciated. THz, RLH

Thanks for the complete error message!

A STOP 0x7e error is usually a corrupt driver problem. And, since you
included the reference to the file NV_AGP.SYS - we can presume that the error
has something to do with this file (although it may not be the cause).

The first step would be to go to the nVidia site and download the latest
WHQL certified drivers (WHQL drivers have been certified, by Microsoft, to
run with Windows). Here's a link to the latest version for GeForce and TNT
cards: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_78.01.html

Next, go to Start...Run...and type in DEVMGMT.MSC and press enter. Click on
the plus (+) sign next to display adaptor, then right click on your display
adaptor and select UNINSTALL. Answer yes to the dialog that asks if you're
sure you want to do this (your system will still boot up with video even
though this is uninstalled).

Then, reboot your system. When the Found New Harware Wizard comes up, tell
it that you don't want to install the new hardware. Once you've dismissed
the Wizard, double click on the nVidia file and follow the prompts to install
the new drivers.

Reboot the system and all should be well. There are other troubleshooting
steps if this doesn't work.

Here is a site where you can research your Stop Error:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

The nv_age.sys is related to your video card. You could try:

A. Updating the drivers:

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The card mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if onboard video; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

If you have installed drivers from Windows Update, you can roll them
back:

B. A different video card. If the problem disappears with a
known-working card swapped in (properly uninstall the first one and
install the second one), then you know you should replace the original
video card.
